I am one of your many concerned constituents who supports the introduction of legislation banning the sale and installation of lead wheel weights in [ Insert City / State ]. The wheel weight issue has been gaining momentum both overseas and here in the United States for years, and it is time for our state to take a stand against lead.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a staggering 2,000 tons of wheel weights fall off vehicles every year in the U.S. during the normal course of driving. The weights are then pulverized by other cars and washed in to street gutters and storm drains. Eventually, the lead makes its way to nearby streams, lakes and bays, polluting our water throughout the process and endangering our health.

The solution to the problem is the successful implementation of an alternative to lead wheel weights. Steel and zinc are both potential alternatives, but even zinc is considered to be a secondary water contaminant by the EPA, so steel is the only totally non-hazardous option.
